We all knew it, and it’s no surprise that pepperoni comes in at number one year after year. In a poll conducted by YouGov in February 2021, a whopping 64% of Americans said they liked pepperoni on pizza. And it really is the perfect topping. It’s a little bit spicy and gets crispy when you bake it. The flavors and textures perfectly complement the base of cheese, tomato, and crust.
Sausage
Snagging the number two spot is pepperoni’s cousin sausage. People love it for the same reasons they love pepperoni. It’s a protein that adds a little extra flavor and complex taste to the pizza. Every restaurant and pizzeria has its preferred sausage, so this topping can be sweeter or spicer, depending on where you eat.
Mushrooms
The number three spot might be a surprise at first glance, but it makes sense if you think about it for a minute. For some people, mushrooms have an “ick” factor, but the earthy taste brings out the flavors of the other ingredients. You probably won’t order mushrooms as your only topping, but when paired with pepperoni, sausage, or anything else, they’re absolutely delicious.
